What Should I do if an Unattended Body is Found?

There is no mistaking the odor when someone enters a dwelling and discovers an occupant who has passed alone. We understand this is the last thing anyone would want to discover, and in many cases, people don’t know what to do.

We recommend:

  • STOP and consider your own safety first. Please do not enter further into the dwelling. You have no idea what dangers could be in the air or on the surfaces. What could look like someone who passed due to natural causes, may have actually contracted Hepatitis or some other infectious condition. The Universal Precautions concept, established by OSHA, maintains all bodily fluids in an undiscovered death cleanup be treated as if they may be infectious biohazards.

  • Secure the dwelling so no one else can enter.

  • Call your county coroner and or the police and report the situation.

  • Allow first responders to assess the situation and remove the body. Authorities can assist in finding and or contacting next of kin.

  • Contact the highly trained and certified biohazard technicians at Steri-Clean Indiana and do not allow entry until the technicians have arrived. Keep in mind, just because the body has been removed doesn’t mean the potential dangers no longer exist. You do not know what surfaces the deceased touched or what might have happened prior to his/her expiration. The risk for cross contamination by an untrained individual trying to do the right thing is extremely high and can often increase the complexity of the decomposition cleanup. Our technicians will be happy to look for important paperwork or anything else needing to be removed safely and effectively.

Steri-Clean Indiana understands this is a tragic and emotional situation - and we’re here to help! With the passing comes the difficult reality that the home needs to be cleaned and deodorized.

When Steri-Clean Indiana comes to your location to evaluate the situation and formulate remediation strategies, we will arrive in unmarked vehicles, which do not announce to the whole neighborhood something traumatic has happened. We will provide a free assessment and price range and answer any questions you may have. This way you can make an informed decision on how to proceed.

The risk of unknown blood-borne pathogens can be significant to anyone entering the area.  Just wiping up the bodily fluids is not enough to ensure everyone’s safety. Steri-Clean Indiana’s Biohazard Technicians are highly trained to deal with unseen pathogens.  You should not attempt to clean the area without personal protection equipment and proper training. All affected porous materials must be removed.  Hard surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.  Biohazard materials will need to be disposed of through a licensed medical waste company.  Steri-Clean can provide a “Safe-to-Occupy” certificate for your records after remediation.

Natural Death Cleanup

With medical advances and improved independent living, more people are living alone than ever before. The unfortunate side effect in this rise in independence is the increase in people who will die alone, and go undiscovered for days, weeks or even longer. When a body is found in a state of decomposition, the fluids will saturate contents and the structure of a home or automobile. This decomposition, though natural, is very hazardous to anyone in the area and the longer the body sits, the more dangerous the environment becomes. Decomposition releases bacteria, which attracts insects, which will allow further spread of toxic bacteria. It is imperative a scene involving an undiscovered death is cleaned by professionals that know how to isolate the fluids as well as the pungent odor. Cleanup for an undiscovered death can be simple to complex depending on several factors; length of time, location of body, the flooring type, and the environment.

Restoring Peace of Mind

Our decontamination and cleanup services are typically covered by homeowners, commercial, and automobile insurance policies. In addition, many states offer financial assistance for crime scene cleanup and unattended death cleanup as well as other services grieving families may need, such as counseling, funeral costs, home security and more. Studies have shown family members who cleanup their loved ones after a death, specifically a suicide , are 75% more likely to commit suicide themselves.

Please don’t further traumatize and or expose yourself or loved ones to possible communicable diseases. Dead body cleanup should be performed by those that have been professionally trained and know how to properly remove all traces of the event and all associated blood borne pathogens, communicable diseases, and bacteria. Steri-Clean Indiana is the professional resource you can count on every time, anytime. Biohazard cleanup and unnoticed death cleanup are some of the most unfortunate things you will most likely ever have to deal with and I pray it is something you will never experience, but in the unfortunate event you find you are in need of our services know you are a phone call away, 24/7. Our highly trained technicians use the latest technology and techniques in bioremediation. We will remove all residuals left behind by police and other first responders and we only use hospital grade disinfectants to properly clean and decontaminate pathogens, just as we would on our crime scene clean up calls. We are very discrete and committed to your privacy. We only speak to those whom we may have a legal obligation to do so and will be more than willing to speak with your insurance adjuster, so you don’t have to relive this terrible situation. With Steri-Clean Indiana, you can have the peace of mind your loved one’s remains will be handled with the respect they deserve and removed appropriately and discretely.

Decomposition Cleanup and Undiscovered Death

A body that lays undiscovered for as little as 1-2 days will begin to decompose. Bodily fluids slowly leak out and saturate anything in the path of gravity.  This causes a complex problem and needs to be properly cleaned. What may appear like a simple stain on the surface is actually just the beginning of the problem. The odor associated by decomposition is overwhelming, to say the least. It will remain embedded in the contents and the structure itself if not effectively dealt with.

Wood and concrete subfloors are often completely saturated and may not be discovered if the floor covering is not removed. It is very typical for the area of saturation to increase below the floor covering so it is very important to avoid walking too closely to affected areas. If subfloors are not assessed and treated, not only will strong odors persist, but severe health hazards are possible as well. If you can picture a constant drop of water on one area of carpet, the surface of the carpet will only have a small area affected. Underneath the carpet, however, the water spreads out as it travels with gravity.

Unfortunately, we cannot remove a bloody mattress as is. Mattresses, couches and other furniture items simply cannot be taken to a licensed medical waste facility whole. We must cut out the affected portions and place them into biohazard transport containers. The remainder of the unaffected furniture will also be removed but disposed of at a regular landfill. Homeowners insurance will almost always cover the cost of our services and possibly the replacement of items affected in the residence.
