Pets are wonderful, aren’t they? Over 68% of households across America think so, but sometimes they can be real stinkers. I mean, who relishes the opportunity to continuously clean up after them day after day week after week?

Who isn’t guilty, a time or two, of waiting until the next rain and letting mother nature make it all go away? We all need to be a little more aware of the potential consequences of improperly cleaning up animal waste.

Steri-Clean Northern Indiana is your local resource and we will be very happy to discuss potential dangers and benefits associated with animal waste cleanup.  Since 1995, Steri-Clean has been serving the residents and businesses of Indiana providing effective and reliable extreme decluttering and decontamination services including animal waste cleanup. Our professionals are highly trained and skilled at ensuring the highest safety and health standards are met because we understand your property can be liable if people get sick as a result of the animal waste left in a negligent manner.

Our services are essential for businesses to ensure compliance with local and state laws that can affect your company. Our animal waste cleanup professionals are fully capable of handling any problem. The building materials affected by urine and feces can become soaked. This might also lead to problems with indoor air quality as well. We remove the contaminated items, but we also ensure the area is free from odors afterward.

Pet Waste Is Toxic

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has deemed pet waste a “non-point source of pollution”, which puts solid pet waste in the same category as oil and toxic chemicals! Pet waste, specifically feces, contains protozoa - Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Salmonella, as well as hookworms, ringworms, tapeworms, and fecal coliform, bacteria which includes E. Coli. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pet droppings can contribute to diseases animals pass to humans, called zoonoses. When pet waste is allowed to dwell without remediation, these nasty bugs can be released and remain in place for very long periods of time just waiting to infect another animal or worse a loved one.

Home interiors with heavy accumulations of feces and urine can damage dwellings beyond repair, release a host of potentially toxic bioaerosols and gases into the air, and create odor problems for neighbors. Disease exposure could occur through inhalation, contact, or via vectors such as insects. Individuals who are immunocompromised or who have respiratory diseases may be at particular risk. Buildings may also become structurally unsound.

Cleaning Up Pet Waste

For most pet owners, dealing with the occasional accident is pretty standard and no big deal. However, things happen, and the pet owner becomes unable to manage the needs of the pet over a period of time resulting in urine and or feces accumulating on the floor. The dangers are very real and should be remediated by a professional biohazard company.

We truly understand the potential severity and our certified biohazard and odor technicians know how to deeply penetrate the home’s affected areas and eliminate the dangers and obnoxious odors that come from animal waste. A thorough inspection can determine the amount of damage and the extent of cleaning necessary to address the problem.

Cleaning Cat Urine and Waste

For homes that are severely affected by pet waste, we are the company to turn to. Unfortunately, remediating cat waste and urine odors can be one of the most difficult to eliminate. Our furry feline’s waste stream is relatively small but quite concentrated and when allowed to dwell over periods of time will saturate floors and absorb into hard sub surfaces like wood and concrete. To make matters worse, cat urine actually travels behind walls and wicks up, against gravity, into the studs of the home. The urine then crystalizes and when moisture makes contact, rewetting the urine, the smell comes back with gusto.

The key to any pet waste cleanup is source removal and for cats, that means all surfaces saturated with urine including floor covering, drywall, any saturated subfloor. The ammonia smell from cat urine will also permeate all soft materials in the room like furniture, drapery, carpeting, clothing, etc.  Ammonia can be toxic. Homes with excess concentrations of ammonia can cause irritation of the eyes and nose and can even lead to loss of smell.

Steri-Clean Indiana’s certified technicians ensure safety comes first donning properly fitted PPE when necessary in addition to respirators. We want our associates to return home in the same condition they arrived to work.

Removing Animal Waste from Rental Properties

Property owners often ask about prepping a property for a new tenant or selling the property.  Steri-Clean Indiana is proficient in cleaning, deodorizing, disinfecting, and preparing the home for the next tenant or owner.

How Do I Get Rid of Pet Odors on My Own
  • The hard and fast rule about odor remediation is to always first remove the source. Any materials saturated with waste should be removed whenever possible. Consideration should also be given to soft surfaces as they will off-gas absorbed odors over time without proper cleaning.

  • Clean adjacent lightly affected surfaces to remove bulk waste that remains. NOTE: Do Not clean using bleach in solution. Bleach is not an appropriate cleaning solution and deactivates when in contact with soiled surfaces. It is corrosive to metals and a known lung irritant. In the presence of cat urine, a dangerous vapor can be created.

  • Neutralize any remaining urine salts with specialized cleaner designed to counteract PH levels of urine, extract and digest waste components.

  • Apply six log kill (99.9999%) EPA registered hospital-grade disinfectants to all surfaces. Steri-Clean uses a proprietary disinfectant that completely kills the odor by cleaving the cells or spores.

  • Allow affected areas to dry completely (very important).

  • Re-evaluate remaining odor and repeat steps as necessary.

  • Do not apply primer sealer or paint affected surfaces unless you are absolutely satisfied with the result. Covering these areas will prevent supplemental efforts by professional odor technicians such as Steri-Clean.

Anyone working in an ammonia-rich environment should wear a properly fitted respirator with an acid gas cartridge filter.  In extreme cases, an oxygen-supply unit may be needed.
