What’s Involved in Cleaning a Crime Scene?

Stress at work or in the home seems to be an ever-increasing reality today. When violent trauma results, the cleanup may not be limited to just bodily fluids and blood. Damages to the property are typical. However, these damages could also be caused by the activities of law enforcement. Fingerprint dusting, broken glass or doors and tear gas are sometimes left behind. Investigators and first responders may unknowingly cause cross contamination during their activities to bring resolution and safety to the situation.

Knowing what to look for and how to safely clean the scene quickly and effectively requires the efforts of highly trained and certified Steri-Clean Indiana biohazard technicians. Steri-Clean Indiana is registered and insured as a medical waste generator in the state of Indiana and is therefore able to ensure all contaminated or hazardous waste materials are contained in medical waste bins and legally transported to a licensed medical waste disposal company to maintain the safety for everyone involved.

Professional Cleaning & Decontamination Handled Discreetly

Most people don’t realize that any crime scene can be hazardous. Even if the victim was a friend or family member, it does not mean there are no dangers present. There are dozens of pathogens and diseases that can be transmitted through blood and bodily fluids during the crime scene cleanup process. The risks remain present even after the body is removed, sometimes for days and weeks. Some of these do not show any signs or symptoms for years so the host carrier may not have even known they were infected. That is why we always follow OSHA guidelines for Blood Borne Pathogens and treat all bodily fluids and potentially infectious.

These risks can also be present after the blood has been wiped up and naked to the visible eye. It is vital to apply the correct EPA registered hospital grade disinfecting solutions. Quickly mopping up of the affected areas can often only spread the potentially infectious pathogens around. Steri-Clean Indiana technicians are trained to properly remediate biohazard waste, more importantly, to find and sanitize where the fluids might travel over time. We use a variety of safe cleaning agents as well as personal protective gear (PPE’s) to stop blood borne pathogens. We truly understand this is overwhelming and psychologically draining, so allow us to take this burden from you and know you will have a clean and safe home when you return.

Steri-Clean Indiana understands this is a private matter and something that need not be shared with anyone, but you. We are committed to compassionately helping you through this process. Only with your permission, we will work with your insurance adjuster or anyone you deem necessary, so you don’t have to relive the events that just took place. With that said, we strongly believe you deserve privacy and respect and will not speak to the media, neighbors, friends, or anyone else unless we are legally obligated. The events that directly affected your life have no business being shared by anyone but you.

FAQ’s For Crime Scene Cleanup

We are often asked similar questions from homeowners and businesses about the biohazard cleanup process and thought we would share some of that information here.

  • Who cleans up a crime scene?

ANSWER: In the state of Indiana there are currently no laws or regulations preventing you from cleaning a minor accident involving blood at your home. However, the general guideline is anything larger than a dinner plate should be remediated by a professional crime scene/biohazard cleanup company.

  • Will my insurance cover this?

ANSWER: Usually, homeowners insurance covers the cost of disaster, suicide cleanup, trauma and crime scene cleanup, in addition to biohazard disinfection. Each case and policy can be unique and since dealing with homeowner’s insurance can lead to re-living the tragedy, allow us to help you through the process and ensure the underwriter has everything they need to process the claim and that you are represented by a company who is looking after your best interests so the settlement is as beneficial to you as it can be.

  • Can my family or employees clean up blood? Should they?

ANSWER: If the trauma occurs at a commercial property, the rules change dramatically. OSHA has very strict guidelines about what an employer must provide to employees who respond to biohazards. Those guidelines include proper equipment, annual training, Hepatitis B vaccinations, PPE’s and such. Liabilities abound when employers put their associates in positions they are not trained for or are not familiar with.

In the case of a suicide or trauma in which a family member cleans up the scene, studies have shown there is often additional psychological distress and undue burden placed on those who self-perform this cleaning. These studies indicate a family member or friend is 75% more likely to harm themselves and or have lasting effects. Consideration must be taken for the emotional impact a biohazard cleanup might have on those who are involved.

  • What does crime scene cleanup or biohazard cleanup cost?

ANSWER: Establishing how much a biohazard cleanup will cost is difficult. The total damage and the necessary tools and materials needed to get a location back to a usable state make a difference in what the project will cost. We will be happy to discuss potential cost as we learn more about the situation, however, we always conduct a free onsite initial assessment to present an estimated range that will be provided to you for consideration. Onsite assessments are conducted by our highly trained and certified biohazard technicians who are fully prepared to begin restoring your property if you elect to proceed. We understand time is of the essence and are always ready to provide the peace of mind you deserve.
